Hong Kong Fencing Association (“HKFA”) today announced the details of an annual fencing event, Blue Cross Insurance Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships 2016 to be held from 3rd to 5th December 2016 at Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre.
Mr. Cheung Siu Lun invited Ms. Cheung Kimberley Vanessa, Mr. Lam Hin Chung and Mr. Nicholas Edward Choi, who were gold medallists of the Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships 2015 to share their experiences gained from their previous competitions.

The members of the Hong Kong Fencing Team members (From Left to Right: Ms. Lin Po Heung, Mr. Nicholas Edward Choi, Mr. Lam Hin Chung, Mr. Cheung Ka Long, Mr. Cheung Siu Lun and Ms. Cheung Kimberley Vanessa) shared their preparation tips and strategies.

Mr. Cheung Ka Long and Ms. Lin Po Heung expressed that they were ready for the Championships and aimed to strive for their best results.

Officiating guests and the members of the Hong Kong Fencing Team wished the “Blue Cross Insurance Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships 2016” every success

The kick-off ceremony cum media luncheon took place at a contemporary restaurant surrounded by a panoramic view of Victoria Harbour. Officiating guests included Mr. Wally Yeung, Chairman of HKFA; Mr. Patrick Wan, Managing Director of Blue Cross (Asia-Pacific) Insurance Limited (“Blue Cross”); renowned fencers Mr. Cheung Siu Lun, Mr. Cheung Ka Long, Ms. Lin Po Heung; and gold medallists from the Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships 2015 Mr. Nicholas Edward Choi, Mr. Lam Hin Chung and Ms. Cheung Kimberley Vanessa. Like last year, Blue Cross Insurance takes great pleasure in being the title sponsor and insurance partner of the Championships, and to further collaborate with HKFA in making the event a success.

Upon the approach of Blue Cross Insurance Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships 2016 and Blue Cross Insurance Asian Fencing Championships 2017, Chairman Mr. Wally Yeung unveiled the highlights and the preparation progress of the Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships 2016 at the kick-off event: “As of the registration deadline today, we have received a total of 148 fencers from 15 countries, compared to the 421 contestants from that of last year, which is very encouraging news to us. This year we have newly added on a Team Category (團體賽事項目) which attracted top-notch international fencing teams to sign up for the Championships. To accommodate more matches for fencers, it will be extended to a 3-day competition.

To make the event even more exciting, Blue Cross raised the cash prize value as well as the number of winners who are entitled for this year’s ‘Blue Cross Insurance Best Fencer Awards’. The top four finalists (Gold, Silver, and two Bronzes) of each Senior Individual Event (成人組個人賽項目) will receive the cash prizes, which are now also opened for all local and international contestants. In addition, all champions from the Master Events (高級組項目) will receive a Blue Cross Travel Insurance Plan. Mr. Yeung further added, “Asian Fencing Championships is the largest-scaled fencing event which is held in Asia annually. Since Hong Kong is the hosting city of the Asian Fencing Championships 2017 for the first time, HKFA is proud to be the organiser of such a competition reaching international standards. We are expecting more than 30 countries with over 350 fencers to enrol in this regional competition. In recent years, our local fencers have been making a mark on the international scene, and we are sincerely looking forward to witnessing Hong Kong fencers reach another new height by taking advantage of competing at the hosting city!”

During the luncheon, Managing Director of Blue Cross Mr. Patrick Wan said, "We at Blue Cross are very honoured to again become the title sponsor of the Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships 2016 and Asian Fencing Championships 2017. The core values between insurance and fencing are very similar. From being well-planned ahead to detailed strategy development, we believe that protection and planning in advance are crucial to not only athletes but also people from all walks of life. Whether we are in a life journey or in a competition, we all need sufficient protection as a backup so as to help us move forward and take up more challenges ahead. Here, I would like to wish all the fencers good luck and achieve the best results, making the team and the city proud.”

While interacting with the media at the luncheon, East Asian Games’ gold medallist Mr. Cheung Siu Lun (Siu Lun), along with Mr. Nicholas Edward Choi (Nic), Mr. Lam Hin Chung (Lam), Ms. Cheung Kimberley Vanessa (Kimberley), Mr. Cheung Ka Long (Ka Long) and Ms. Lin Po Heung (Lin), each shared their preparation plans and progress for the upcoming Championships. In addition, Siu Lun and three fencing representatives have participated as the ambassadors for 2016 Blue Cross Insurance Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships’ advertising campaign. Blue Cross and HKFA also topped up this year’s advertising efforts in order to maximise public exposure for this exciting event. Siu Lun expressed his gratitude to all who gave blessings to the Championships: “I would like to once again thank Blue Cross for all the support extended to the fencing sport, which has given abundant opportunities for youngsters to uncover their potential in fencing. This year, Blue Cross sponsored the ‘Blue Cross Insurance Youth Fencing Training Programme 2016/17’ (『2016-17藍十字保險青少年劍擊訓練計劃』), which offers various classes and training sessions for local youths to participate in and further develop their fencing skills and self-values.” Siu Lun further added that he would take part in the audition session of both the ‘Blue Cross Insurance Junior Fencing Development Programme’ (「藍十字保險青苗劍擊培訓計劃」) and ‘Blue Cross Insurance District Fencing Team Training Programme’ (「藍十字保險地區劍擊隊訓練計劃」) to select junior fencers with great potential for overseas training together with other experienced fencers.

During the event, Siu Lun also invited Nic, Lam and Kimberley who were gold medallists of the Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships 2015, as well as Ka Long and Lin, the Hong Kong representatives of Rio Olympics Games to share their experiences gained from their previous competitions. Lam expressed, “I am very delighted to have won the gold medal and cash prize award from the Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships 2015, I look forward to competing this year as well.” Nic who put on an excellent performance and led the Hong Kong Fencing Team in winning gold medals recently also shared, “I always remind myself to perform my best while maintaining a relaxed mindset in every match, and that helps me gear up for competitions. I look forward to uplifting my performance level during the competition to my very best in both coming Championships!”

Lin, the Rio 2016 Olympics representative, added, “I am so happy to see that all of our young fencers are full of energy and passion towards the Championships. Although not every one of us participated in the Olympics this year, I trust that there will be more Hong Kong fencers eligible for the next Olympic games.” Ka Long, who finished amongst the 16-finalist in the Men’s Individual Category of 2016 Olympic Games, shared, “The Olympics is truly an eye-opening event that I have accumulated a lot of valuable experiences from, even though I have only managed to progress to the 16-finalist round. I am still young and strongly believe that there are more upcoming opportunities lying ahead. Hong Kong is a small city, yet we have a lot of great home-grown fencers who are capable of stepping up in the international fencing scene. I will do my best in the upcoming Competitions to strive for a higher ranking!”

All fencers are excited and ready for the upcoming challenges. Siu Lun wrapped up, “As a Hong Kong fencer, I am most delighted to see that the sport of fencing is gaining more traction of interest and organisation in Hong Kong nowadays. I hope that I can inspire more junior fencers to perform their best, whether in their fencing career or life in general.” He concluded, “Fencing is a strategy-driven sport where fencers must have a clear mindset and detailed strategy besides everyday physical training. This concept is shared similarly with the concept of being insured: from being well planned ahead to detailed strategy in the pursuit of a brighter future.”

Joins hands with Hong Kong Fencing Association to Launch Youth Fencing Training Programme
Striving to Promote Fencing Sports For All

Blue Cross (Asia-Pacific) Insurance Limited (“Blue Cross Insurance”) has been very supportive in promoting local fencing sports by sponsoring Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships 2015 organised by Hong Kong Fencing Association (“HKFA”). Through the success of last year’s tournament, it is an affirmation of Hong Kong’s capabilities in organising large-scale international sports event, thereby it is no surprise that Asian Fencing Championships 2017 will be hosted in Hong Kong for the first time.
Enthusiastic students of Blue Cross Summer Elementary Fencing Training Course are ready for taking up the challenge.

Course participants are learning the basic skills and posture instructed by fencing instructor.

Happy group photo of all the participants.

Blue Cross Youth Fencing Training Programme Promotes Fencing for All Youngsters

To live up to the mission of promoting fencing to the general public, Blue Cross Insurance is collaborating with HKFA again this year by launching the Blue Cross Youth Fencing Training Programme 2016-17. There are 4 extensive fencing training courses offered to more youngsters this time around for the opportunity to participate in fencing training and discover their potential. It is expected that 600 teenagers will benefit from the participation of this initiative.

To kick-start the Youth Programme, Blue Cross Summer Elementary Fencing Training Course was offered from 18th July with 17 training classes held in different districts across Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories. From this year, 200 participants enrolled in this Course, representing more than 20% increase in participation over the previous year. The next phase of this Youth Programme, the Blue Cross Intermediate Fencing Training Course is now open for enrollment through the Hong Kong Fencing Association’s website (http://www.hkfa.org.hk). In order to encourage more participants and attract more talented athletes, the participants of Elementary and Intermediate Fencing Training Courses will get a pair of Absolute Fencing gloves and a fencing training sword upon completion of either course. In addition, after finished the Intermediate Fencing Training Course, the participants can choose to join Young Athletes Training Scheme or Inter-district Fencing Team Training for progressive trainings.

Young Athletes Training Scheme and Inter-district Fencing Team Training are 1-year courses which are offered in 2 terms with each participant required to be screened via demonstrating competence across several tests. This year, Blue Cross is honored to invite a veteran from the Hong Kong Fencing Foil Team, Mr. Cheung Siu Lun as one of the judges to screen out potential young fencers who might just be the future of Hong Kong Fencing Team. Furthermore, participants of either training courses who demonstrate outstanding performances in the end of course tournament will get a chance to participant in the more intensive training course overseas sponsored by Blue Cross. The overseas training will be accompanied by the team members of Hong Kong District Training Centre, definitely a great opportunity for young athletes to enhance their fencing skills and interact with the senior fencers.

Blue Cross Joins Hands with Hong Kong Fencing Association to Co-organise International Fencing Tournament

In the meantime, HKFA will organise Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships again in December this year. For this year’s tournament, team matches will be introduced for the first time in the Championships and the number of event day will be extended to 3 days (from 3rd to 5th December 2016), elevating this year’s Championships to a larger and higher level. To show the full support of Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships 2016, Blue Cross Insurance will continue its commitment as the title sponsor and insurance partner again this year. Reflecting the new tournament structure, Blue Cross Insurance is generously offering more cash prizes in 3 different categories of Men’s and Women’s championships this year with 4 winners for each category (Champion, first-runner up and second-runner up with 2 places). In order to attract more top fencers from around the world to Hong Kong to compete for the game, the cash prize scheme is not only for Hong Kong fencers to participate but also open for overseas fencers this year. The incentive aims to lift up the status of the tournament in terms of exposure of athletes from around the world and the fencing skills that will be on show.

In addition, Asian Fencing Championships 2017 is confirmed to be held at AsiaWorld-Expo in June 2017 for 6 days. It is expected that it will attract over 30 countries and more than 300 fencers to take part in individual and team games. Asian Fencing Championships 2017 is an annual signature event in fencing, it is also the first ever large-scale international event hosted by HKFA. In recent years, Hong Kong fencing athletes have been achieving outstanding results in championships and major sports events. As the home team, Blue Cross Insurance wish all Hong Kong fencers capitalize their home advantage to do their very best and reach a new height of Hong Kong fencing sports by achieving more medals.

Moreover, to further enhance the overall protection, the Medical Expenses benefit and Personal Accident benefit under the Select Plan have been raised to HK$600,000 each, while the benefit amount of Follow-up Medical Expenses in Hong Kong has been increased at the same time. Covering the working holiday destination as well as leisure side trips, the Plan allows young people to enjoy their overseas working holiday at ease.

The Working Holiday Scheme gives them a great chance to take this forward. While working holiday participants may be exposed to higher risks as they will stay longer on their own overseas than on ordinary trips, an all-round insurance plan may come in handy, allowing them to enjoy their overseas experience with no worries."

Worry-free Road Trips with "Rental Vehicle Excess Protection"

There has been an increasing trend for travellers taking road trip holiday in recent years, but a trip can be spoiled if the traveller gets involved in a car accident or the rental vehicle gets damaged or stolen. Motor insurance cover normally comes with the car rental agreement and the basic rental fee often includes an insurance cover that requires the renter to bear an excess of $5,000-$10,000. Travellers can opt for no excess for their motor insurance, but then the overall rental cost will be increased substantially. With Blue Cross' "Rental Vehicle Excess Protection", customers can now enjoy their road trips at a lower rental cost without the worry of paying the insurance excess as this benefit is tailored to subsidise the "excess of claims" if the insured files a claim.

Benefit Items Descriptions Maximum Limit
Rental Vehicle Excess Protection
  • If the insured hires a rental vehicle during the journey and have a car accident, or the rental vehicle is damaged or stolen, the excess of claims in the motor insurance policy will be payable.[NEW]

Enjoy Extended Travel Insurance Coverage following the Implementation of the New Outbound Travel Alert System

Hong Kong, 15th October 2009 - Blue Cross (Asia-Pacific) Insurance Limited ("Blue Cross") announced today the roll-out of its new travel insurance arrangement, in response to the implementation of the new Outbound Travel Alert System – a three colour-coded system comprising of amber, red and black to differentiate between the levels of risk, to be launched by the Security Bureau of Hong Kong on 20 October 2009. From now until 31 March 2010, Blue Cross will offer extended "Cancellation Charges#" and "Curtailment of Trip" benefits under its travel insurance plans*, giving travellers greater peace of mind.

As a leading player in the local travel insurance industry, Blue Cross has decided to extend the "Cancellation Charges#" and "Curtailment of Trip" benefits under its travel insurance plans* in the event that the Security Bureau of Hong Kong issues a Black Alert. Moreover, should a Black Alert be issued as a result of war, civil unrest, etc. which are commonly uncovered, insured persons can still enjoy the above-mentioned extended coverage when such travel alert prevails.

Mr. Patrick Wan, Managing Director of Blue Cross said, "Blue Cross travel insurance has been highly regarded by travellers. We welcome the implementation of Outbound Travel Alert System by the Security Bureau of Hong Kong that helps travellers better plan ahead their itineraries and in response, we have reacted instantly to this new arrangement. Should a customer need to cancel or curtail the journey as a result of the issuance of a Black Alert for a travel destination by the Security Bureau of Hong Kong, he/she will be covered according to the policy terms and conditions. Although war, revolution, civil unrest, etc., are commonly excluded for coverage in travel insurance, to ensure customers’ greater peace of mind in their journeys, Blue Cross has made a special arrangement by offering extended "Cancellation Charges#" and "Curtailment of Trip" benefits to insured persons by waiving the relevant exclusion in the event of a Black Alert be issued by the Security Bureau of Hong Kong as a result of these scenarios, bringing them greater sense of security. "

In addition, Blue Cross will offer assistance to policyholders who need to cancel their policies and fully refund the premiums paid should the Security Bureau of Hong Kong issue a Red Alert or Black Alert for a travel destination.

* The travel insurance plans include "TravelSafe Plus" series and "Travel Smart".
# "Cancellation Charges" benefit is applicable provided that: c) the policy/certificate of insurance is issued not later than 1 day before the day on which the Black Alert is first issued at the travel destination; and d) cancellation of travel arrangements shall take place not earlier than 7 days before the commencement date of the period of insurance and the Black Alert shall prevail at the time of such cancellation.

In accordance with the guideline issued by the Security Bureau of Hong Kong, where there are signs of threat in a certain place that may affect the personal safety of Hong Kong travellers, an Amber Alert will be issued to remind Hong Kong travellers to monitor the situation and exercise caution in the area concerned; a Red Alert signifies significant threat and Hong Kong travellers should adjust travel plans and avoid non-essential travel to that region; and where there is severe threat, a Black Alert will be issued to urge Hong Kong travellers to avoid all travel to the relevant area.

Blue Cross New "TravelSafe Plus" and "Travel Smart" Launched with Enhanced Benefits

Hong Kong, 2nd March, 2009 - Blue Cross (Asia-Pacific) Insurance Limited ("Blue Cross") is pleased to introduce its new travel insurance plans, namely "TravelSafe Plus" and "Travel Smart". In response to the adverse impacts on travellers due to a series of unanticipated travel-related incidents last year, such as the sudden wind-up of an airline affecting a lot of travellers with air tickets purchased from this airline, and many travellers suffering from the closure of airport in Thailand due to anti-government riots who had to pay additional transportation and accommodation expenses, the new insurance plans are specially designed to address such protection needs. The pioneering wind-up of airline coverage offers special allowance to travellers in the event that they have to pay additional expenses for alternative travel tickets. Moreover, the newly introduced closure of airport coverage as well as the enhanced curtailment of trip or travel delay coverage as a result of unanticipated outbreak of riots or civil commotions further assure travellers of a hassle-free journey in case of unavoidable change of itinerary. Whenever customers travel for business or for leisure, "TravelSafe Plus" or "Travel Smart" is their best companion for total peace of mind.

To best fit customers' individual needs, both "TravelSafe Plus" and "Travel Smart" provide two distinctive worldwide plans of different levels of protection and a custom-made China plan. All benefit items are not subject to any deductible. In addition to the enhanced coverage mentioned above, the new insurance plans promise to take care of customers' medical needs even when travelling to countries where the medical expenses are expensive, with medical coverage over HK$1 million. Concerning the horrendous terrorist act in India last year, terrorist acts are also covered in terms of personal accident, medical expenses, travel delay and 24-hour worldwide emergency services. In respect of recent bird flu cases in the nearby regions, an insured person can lodge a claim if he/she is unfortunately infected during the journey.

Furthermore, popular exciting sports activities such as scuba diving, rafting, bungee jumping and parachuting, if in the nature of leisure and non-professional, are all under coverage without the charge for additional premium. Since more Hong Kong people commute between Hong Kong and China nowadays, an insured person can receive emergency cash assistance at BEA branches in China if he/she suffers from loss of personal money or travel documents when travelling in China.

For the sake of convenience of different customers, "TravelSafe Plus" can be taken out from Blue Cross' authorised travel agents or distributors while "Travel Smart" can be enrolled via Blue Cross website. Please contact any travel agents and distributors of Blue Cross or call the Blue Cross Travel Insurance Hotline at 3608 2932 for more details. Online application is available at here.

All-in-one Outpatient Insurance Introduces Clinical Surgery Coverage

Hong Kong, 15th February, 2006 - Blue Cross (Asia-Pacific) Insurance Limited ("Blue Cross") has launched the first medical insurance in the market that covers clinical procedures in its outpatient benefits, namely All-in-one Outpatient Insurance.

In addition to treatments by specialists and Chinese Medicine Practitioners, the plan covers unlimited visits to general practitioners and offers annual preventive check-up for free.

The issues of increasing medical expenditure and aging population have prompted the Government to seek for a reform in the local healthcare system.

According to the statistics of the Hospital Authority, the number of general outpatient attendances reached 4.3 million in 2004, representing an increase of 3.4 times over last year, while the number of day patients recorded a continuous growth of approximately 25%.

The plan includes a unique feature to cover more than 20 specific clinical procedures that can be performed in appointed network clinics, such as cryotherapy and treatments for hemorrhoid, incision and drainage, and antral lavage.

With no other outpatient plans providing the same coverage in the market, the plan helps patients save time and money for receiving the treatment without the need to stay in a hospital.

All-in-one Outpatient Insurance offers 3 levels of benefits. The insured members will have access to over 500 general practitioners with no limit on the number of visits. Specialist consultation, diagnostic X-ray and laboratory tests, and physiotherapist treatment are also available upon referral by the attending physician.

Higher plan levels provide annual preventive check-up at an appointed centre for free, set no limit on the number of specialist visits and cover both Chinese Medicine Practitioner consultation (including 2 packs of medication) and physiotherapist treatment.

People aged 15 days to 65 are eligible to join the plan. The minimum premium is HK$1,628 per year, approximately HK$4.5 per day. The insured can receive medical treatment at any one of the network clinics simply by presenting a medical card and making a co-payment at as low as HK$30 for general consultation.

Successful applications for the plan before 31st March, 2006 will be entitled to a free gift. If taking out other individual medical insurance from Blue Cross at the same time, with total premium of HK$3,000 or above, the applicant will also be given a HK$50 Park'N Shop cash coupon while stock lasts.

More details about All-in-one Outpatient Insurance are available with Blue Cross' insurance consultants, or by calling Customer Services Hotline 3608 2988. Application form can also be downloaded here.

DecorationSafe: First of Its Kind for Property Owners and Decoration Contractors

Hong Kong, 12th September, 2005 - Underwriting all lines of general insurance products, Blue Cross (Asia-Pacific) Insurance Limited ("Blue Cross") has launched the first insurance plan in the market to protect property owners and contractors against accidental loss due to home, office or shop decoration.

The new package plan, DecorationSafe, is an all-risk policy covering the damage to decoration materials, third party liability, principal property damage and scaffolding work.

With Hong Kong experiencing economic recovery, the property market has witnessed upward surge in the take-up of residential and commercial properties creating larger demand for decoration works.

According to government statistics, the total amounts of consideration involved in the sales and purchase agreements and assignments of building units in 2004 were up by 85.7% and 47.5% respectively comparing to the previous year. In 2004, however, there were more than 17,500 industrial accidents.

To safeguard against considerable loss arising out of accidents, property owners and contractors need sufficient insurance cover for their premises and property that likely cost over a million dollars in value.

In the past, decoration projects in small-to-medium scale usually did not take out commercial insurance for individual risks due to high premium charges. There was no insurance plan with comprehensive protection for home, office and shop decoration in the retail market. Under household insurance plans, it is not uncommon that decoration is an excluded risk.

With 4 levels of protection, DecorationSafe provides comprehensive cover for the damage of decoration materials and third party liability up to HK$500,000 and HK$8,000,000 respectively. The minimum premium is $800 for each insured contract or decoration period.

Other features include the compensation for removal of debris and principal property damage due to accidents. If the final contract value is higher than its quotation, the plan's coverage amount will be automatically increased up to 10%.

By paying an additional premium, decoration projects with scaffolding works such as replacement of window or exterior piping will be covered.

A promotional offer of 10% premium discount will be given to policy-owners of DecorationSafe who take out a household insurance plan with Blue Cross before the end of January 2006.

Further details about DecorationSafe can be obtained from Blue Cross' insurance consultants, or Customer Services Hotline 3608 2988.

Pet Care Insurance: Comprehensive Medical Benefits for Cats and Dogs

Hong Kong, 24th June, 2005 - Blue Cross (Asia-Pacific) Insurance Limited ("Blue Cross") has launched the innovative Pet Care Insurance to meet the needs of pet lovers in Hong Kong by offering comprehensive health protection for cats and dogs through our web of strategically located veterinary clinics.

According to Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, the current number of licensed dogs reaches over 22,000. The number of pet cats, which require no license, is estimated to be over 80,000. Pet owners are located almost everywhere in the territory and eagerly look for convenient, reliable and affordable veterinary services when their pet is sick or injured.

Aiming to meet the specific needs of pet owners, Blue Cross’ Pet Care Insurance is designed to provide a wide range of medical benefits for their pets. It covers the costs for veterinary consultation, prescribed medication and room and board, with up to 12 visits per year for each of these benefits. Clinical and surgical expenses are reimbursable up to HK$15,000 per year.

According to the figures of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ("SPCA") Hong Kong, there was a 40% increase over the past 2 years in the overall number of treatments given to pets including consultations, vaccination, surgery (excluding desexing) and hospitalisation. The demand for the related services is obvious.

In addition to medical benefits, the insurance plan offers tailored coverage for items such as third party liability, funeral service, cancellation of overseas trip and advertising expenses for locating missing or stolen pet. Cats and dogs aged 6 months to 8 years are eligible to be insured.

Owners of insured pet will receive a Pet Care Card for paying the consultation fee at the network of veterinary clinics. The Card also covers preventive care service for free physical examination, dietary and preventive advice and vaccination of mixed vaccine at the clinics.

Pet Care Insurance is underwritten by Blue Cross and distributed by Apex Insurance Brokers Ltd. Details of the product will be available upon enquiry at 3412 2666.
